CBD and South East light rail - bringing light rail to Sydneys streets
In December 2012, the NSW Government announced the CBD & South East Light Rail (CSELR) project that will introduce a new 12km light rail line to Sydney’s streets. Connecting Circular Quay with Randwick and Kingsford, the new line will have a capacity of up to 9,000 passengers per hour in each direction (6,000 upon opening, expected in late 2019 / early 2020) and will markedly reduce bus congestion in the CBD. George Street will be pedestrianised between Hunter and Bathurst Streets and light rail vehicles will operate without overhead wiring from Circular Quay to Bathurst Street.
