Practical application of turnout grinding
Turnouts are a critical element of railway infrastructure, not only due to their essential role for creating a network of tracks, but also their much higher installation and maintenance costs. Grinding is well recognised as a long term cost effective maintenance task. Therefore grinding of turnouts is a highly important activity, however the peculiarities of the turnout design make grinding them a unique challenge. This paper outlines the engineering approach adopted by Speno Australia to address this challenge, incorporating the machine design and construction, grinding stone selection, process optimisation and practical application.
