Swift communication of track degradation via instrumented vehicles

For many years now, instrumented revenue vehicle technology has been utilised to report track locations where standard rollingstock experiences either dynamic instability or excessive wheel-rail impact. The vehicle instrumentation has been based around a ruggedised data logger. Upon the vehicle’s return to a location with known reliable communications, data is downloaded and processed by computer servers to determine any locations where parameters exceed defined thresholds. In order to improve reporting times, software for controlling the data logger has been modified to provide rudimentary checking for dynamic and impactive threshold exceedences during travel. When detected, a location and brief data stream can be stored for transmission when any region of good communications is encountered. Now, if defects are detected at locations where mobile data reception is available alerts can usually be sent before the next train passes that location, enabling timely speed restrictions to be applied.
