The article compares the construction of the Frejus Motorway Tunnel, between Italy and France, with the nearby 100 year old Mont Cenis Railway Tunnel. The Mont Cenis Tunnel represented the first major use of a multi-drill compressed air operated rig. The Frejus Tunnel construction used on the French side two 5-boom Montabert hydraulic rigs for face drilling with two 3-boom rigs for roof bolting. On the Italian side an Atlascopco hydraulic rig (the Frejus Jumbo) fitted with six booms was used to carry out all drilling operations at the face and for roof bolting. Equipment performance and construction details are described. (TRRL)
