A drift and displacement based seismic assessment method for bridge abutments
The present study is concerned with the drift and displacement based seismic assessment of bridge abutments. This study is distinguished from previous research that has been reported in the literature in that what is of primary interests is the displacement behavior of the wall, as opposed to the dynamic earth pressure. The performance modelling of the abutment wall in seismic conditions has been verified by shaking table experiments, which have been performed on scaled down models. The displacement behavior of the two different abutment structural systems has been studied. Abutments with lesser stem wall thickness show higher displacement demand, and higher drift, with increasing abutment wall height. For a stiff abutment structural system insensitivity of the displacement demand of the abutment with increasing abutment wall height has also been observed. The capability of the scaled down abutment models has also been studied in order to replicate the seismic behavior of prototype abutments.
