URBAN ROAD SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS

Most research on road surfacings has been directed at rural roads and is not always readily applicable to urban roads with their lower traffic speeds and greater congestion. This paper considers the particular requirements or surface characteristics of urban main roads and discusses some of the associated problems, including: skid resistance standards, the influence of texture on skid resistance, wearing course mixes, surface treatments, permanent deformation, noise, and the economic benefits resulting from improvements in skidding resistance at sites having high accident rates.
