WORK OF TECHNICAL COMMITTEE TC 1-6 "VISUAL SIGNALIZATION" OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON ILLUMINATION (CIE)

LES TRAVAUX DU COMITE TECHNIQUE TC 1-6 "SIGNALISATION VISUELLE" DE LA COMMISSION INTERNATIONALE DE L'ECLAIRAGE (CIE)

The author initially refers to the fact that committee tc 1-6 of the international commission for lighting (CIE) results from the merging of two former committees dealing with "signalization colours" and "traffic signs". The paper describes briefly the content of publication 2.2 (1975) "traffic signal colours", the first document prepared by the committee, and draws attention to the modifications to the preceding publication 2w 133 (1959). A review is presented of the numerous problems met in the preparation of recommendations on surface colours intended for visual signalization; the existing uncertainties concerning retroreflection protection lead to envisaging provisionally only a technical report being published. The technical committee work programme now includes the following:- road traffic control signals; - traffic signs; - the preparation of a "visual signalization manual" for which studies have already been done on luminous sources, coloured filters and flashing lights. The third part of the article is devoted more particularly to current problems, such as effective intensity of traffic lights as well as photometry and colorimetry of retroreflectors. (TRRL)
