STRESS CHARTS - RELATIVE DEFORMATIONS OF EXPANDED CLAY CONCRETE

Axial compression tests at a constant rate of deformation were carried out on a series of expanded clay lightweight concrete samples of variable strength. Relative stress/strain charts were established. As with normal concrete, it was observed that the charts evolve from the "plastic" to the "brittle" type for the range of strength it is possible to obtain with the same synthetic chipping. It is thus shown that, for equal strength, expanded clay concrete usable in structures can present very variable relative stress/strain charts. The latter aspect gives rise to the problem of the possible use of a conventional chart for calculating the limit state of lightweight concrete structures. /TRRL/
