Data are given regarding the results of tests demonstrating that the failure of a soil is due to a tearing mechanism, the elastic constant and the limit deformation being constant in the range of loadings studied. Relationships have been obtained between the strength conditions and the initial state of the soil; it has been established that the influence of tensile stresses on plastic deformation can be ignored.
