PROBLEMS OF VISION IN OPPOSING TRAFFIC AT NIGHT IN THE CASE OF DRIVING WITH DIPPED HEADLIGHTS AND ADDITIONAL FOG LAMPS UNDER NORMAL VISIBILITY CONDITIONS

PROBLEME DES SEHENS IM NAECHTLICHEN BEGEGNUNGSVERKEHR IM FALL DES FAHRENS MIT ABBLENDLICHT UND ZUSAETZLICHEM NEBELSCHEINWERFERLICHT BEI NORMALEN SICHTVERHAELTNISSEN

The visibility distances and the psychological glare were studied for dipped headlamps and additional fog lamps under normal visibility conditions. The calculation of the visibility distances was carried out in accordance with the method of Boer and Moracz. Test condition: glare vehicle stationary; observer vehicle driving (60 km/h); concrete pavement; test object grey, 28 cm x 28 cm, degree of reflection 8%. The switching on of fog lamps increased the visibility distance by approximately 2 M with a visibility distance reduction of the opposing traffic driving without fog lamps of 6 - 10 M. The glare evaluation gives an increase in the distance at which the glare is first found to be "uncomfortable" to double the original value. (TRRL)
