Recreating the swamp

Due to the diverse ecological and geographical nature of Minnesota, with agriculture and farmland found in the southwest and wild, forested lands in the northwest, the state's Department of Transportation (MnDOT) must approach wetland mitigation projects differently in the two areas. Minnesota's Wetland Conservation Act requires that wetlands be restored or created in an alternate location when threatened by road construction. Because creation of wetlands is more difficult than restoration, MnDOT has undertaken an investigative project to measure the effectiveness of wetland creation in abandoned gravel pits, as detailed here.
