In search of the game changers

The latest Baseline 3 revision to the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) was adopted in order to provide stability for core European Train Control System (ETCS) functions. Innovations that can add additional functionality without affecting backwards compatibility are now the focus of research, as detailed in this article. Issues discussed include progress relating to international borders; technical stability in terms of variations in ERTMS deployment; Automatic Train Operation (ATO) development; moving towards ETCS Level 3; satellite positioning; and contradictory requirements of rigid deployment versus the evolution of functional capabilities.
