ENGINEERING STRUCTURES: (1) STEEL BRIDGES ORTHOTROPIC SLAB BRIDGES - PRINCIPAL RESULTS OF LCPC STUDIES

The study of orthotropic slabs based on experiments on a large-scale model (16 x 9.9 x 1.6 M) has allowed the examination of the accuracy and validity of various current design methods used by consulting engineers. The following have been analysed:- (1) French regulation method; (2) cross-beam method; (3) finite difference method. Two new methods have been developed in this report, allowing the solution of the continuous cantilever orthotropic slab problem. It should be noted that the problem cannot be solved by classical methods. It is clear that these two methods can be applied to structures other than the orthotropic slab. The Pelikan-Esslinger method is generalised and can be applied to an orthotropic slab of N continuous elastic spans. The various test results have determined the points of stress concentration and their values of the latter, as well as their distribution. (TRRL)
