CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES: (1) STEEL BRIDGES EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF A LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE FOOTBRIDGE

The use of lightweight concrete in the decks of composite bridges gives rise to several particular problems compared to normal concrete. This is why experiments have been carried out during construction of the Cergy-Pontoise Footbridge. The experiments concerned the following:- (1) distribution of stresses in the concrete and steel under short term load, differential behaviour, thermal effects. The short term results show a difference of about 30% between theory and measurement - the latter giving lower values. This difference may arise from errors in the determination of the modulus, or dimensions of the slab. The study of differential effects, based on shrinkage and creep measured on test pieces placed in the structure leads to the same differences if shrinkage is not taken into account, and to much greater differences if it is included in the theory.
