Analytical and Experimental Determination of Nonlinear Wheel-Rail Constraint Relationships
Wheel/rail geometric constraint relationships, such as the effective conicity and gravitational stiffness, strongly influence the lateral dynamics of railway vehicles. In general, these geometric constraints are nonlinear functions of the wheelset lateral displacement. This report describes the development and validation of an analytical procedure to determine these nonlinear functions for arbitrary wheel and rail profiles. Data for validation of this analysis were obtained experimentally. Experimental and analytical data for three validation cases are presented. Results of a limited parametric study are also reported. The computer program for the analytical procedure is described and documented.
