Onward and Upward

This article gives an overview of the research committees and initiatives of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). It discusses how AASHTO’s work to move research into practice contributes to a national culture of transportation innovation. AASHTO’s Standing Committee on Research and its Research Advisory Committee work together to ensure that research results are implemented as innovative solutions to transportation problems. Moving research into practice occurs on at least five fronts under AASHTO's purview: (1) applying the results of the Transportation Research Board’s Cooperative Research Programs, (2) supporting exploratory analysis for innovations, (3) promoting innovations already in use by AASHTO’s members, (4) leveraging resources of the Research Advisory Committee through special task forces, and (5) supporting other national initiatives such as the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) and FHWA’s Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative. Specific projects are profiled under the categories of national initiatives, innovations in asset management, moving on mobility, progress in policy and program delivery, and advancing safety solutions
