Doubling Down on Safety Innovations

This article presents the Every Day Counts (EDC) program and its initiatives to promote innovative but underutilized safety technologies. The program involves the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and a variety of public and private partners. The five innovations discussed are SafetyEdgeSM, intersection/interchange geometrics, high-friction surface treatments, road diets, and data-driven safety analysis. EDC has promoted these technologies primarily to state DOT’s in its first three rounds. However, in the fourth round (2017-2018), it will also include local agencies. Congress has recognized EDC’s successes in enhancing safety and making more efficient use of resources and therefore directed FHWA to continue the program under the 2015 Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.
