AAPT/ISAP International Forum: Nanotechnology Organosilane Compounds for Chemical Bonding in Road Construction

Asphalt and aggregates are the two main components of an asphalt concrete mix and their interaction significantly impacts pavement performance. Asphalt-aggregate pavement failure is most often due to moisture penetrating the mixture and causing damage to pavement strength and durability. Organosilane-based additives for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) have been shown to provide excellent moisture resistance, and this article explores the use of organosilane compounds for asphalt pavement in road construction. The authors' review of laboratory tests reveal the superior performance of HMA mix containing organosilane additive. Moisture sensitivity tests show higher stability and strength for organosilane-containing HMA mix as compared to control mix when confronted with severe moisture exposure. The authors conclude that organosilane additive has the potential to extend pavement life and that organosilane-based HMA mixes both perform well for all climatic conditions and exhibit strong moisture resistance.
