An Investigation of Ndesign Values for Superpave Surface Mixtures

In Superpave surface mixtures, the asphalt binder content in the mix decreases with an increase in the number of gyrations in order to satisfy the volumetric requirements of the mix design procedure. This study seeks to determine the number of design gyrations for Superpave design of asphalt concrete mixes (Ndes) that will optimize mixture performance with respect to fatigue cracking and rutting. The assessment involves six different types of Superpave-designed surface methods, each at 50, 70, 100 and 125 gyrations. Dynamic modulus of the asphalt concrete mix is used to evaluate mix performance in this study and the rutting and fatigue performance of the mixes at different design gyration levels is measured using the DARWin-ME software. Following the research findings, the authors recommend several optimum Ndes values for the surface mixes evaluated.
