FIBRE SPACING IN STEEL FIBRE REINFORCED COMPOSITE MATERIAL

ESPACEMENT DES FIBRES DANS LES COMPOSITES RENFORCES DE FIBRES D'ACIER

A method is presented which, using the analysis of x-ray diagrams, allows the fibre content or its distribution in steel fibre reinforced composite materials to be evaluated. As a basic notion for this method, an apparent fibre spacing is defined as the average spacing between on the one hand the intersection of the projection of individual fibres, and on the other hand a base line arbitrarily drawn on the same plane. Such apparent spacing can be evaluated analytically as a function of fibre length, diameter of the volume occupied and thickness of the sample. Direct measurement can also be made from the radiograph. The comparison of analytical and experimental results is given. /TRRL/
