Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2016 Preliminary Data
In the first six months of 2016 there were an estimated 2,766 pedestrian fatalities as compared to 2,486 deaths during the same period in 2015. There were 5,376 total pedestrian fatalities in 2015. Total pedestrian fatalities for 2016 based on preliminary data are estimated at 5,997. This study, based on preliminary data supplied by all 50 states and the District of Columbia, predicts a 11% increase in pedestrian fatalities for 2016 as compared with 2015. This document looks at trends in pedestrian deaths from 2006 through 2015 and studies preliminary counts for the first six months of 2016. Tables include specific State data and pedestrian fatalities in 10 largest U.S. Cities. Fatality crash patterns are examined, reasons for the increase in fatalities are explored and State pedestrian safety programs are described.
