Freight Assessment Blueprint: Practical Guide for Evaluating Freight Transportation in Support of National Green Freight Programs
Green freight programs are programs aimed at improving the environmental performance, through fuel efficiency and emissions reductions, of the freight sector. This document is a guide to conducting assessments for trucking industry participants who wish to develop green freight programs. It includes best practices on how to conduct an assessment and a guide to information an assessment should contain. Five task areas are outlined: (1) Trucking sector operational characteristics; (2) Fuel conservation technologies decision making; (3) Sales market for freight trucks and trailers; (4) Trends in trucking, shipping, and rail; and (5) Green freight program planning and institutional framework. For each task area, the guide describes why each is important, key stakeholders to consult, data sources and data collection methods. Sample figures and tables and examples of previously completed projects are also included.
