SPECIFICATION FOR GROUND INVESTIGATIONS

The Association of Ground Investigation Specialist' Specification for ground investigations is presented under the following heading: General, Borings, Rotary drilling, Observation and trial pits, Sampling, Special sampling, Ground water observations, In-situ testing, Laboratory testing, and Reports. The first section (General) covers such aspects as definitions, notice of entry and access, making good, compensation, ground elevation, exploration, etc. The diameter of boring, use of clay cutters, use of shells, addition of water, daily reports, and obstructions are covered in the section on borings. Specifications on rotary drilling cover types of bit and equipment, rock core recovery, drill runs, drilling fluids, daily reports, and the various aspects of cores. The fourth section includes exploratory pits for examination of subsoil, ground water, topsoil, turfing backfilling and support of pit sides. Among the aspects of sampling considered here are the best accepted practice for sampling, protection against freezing, sampling frequency, core samples in cohesive soils, abortive sampling, and groundwater sampling. Piston samples and block samples are special sampling techniques. Specifications for groundwater measurement records, installation of standpipes and piezometers are given, as well as for in-situ testing such as calibration of measuring instruments, and vane shear testing.
