DECORATIVE ELECTROPLATED PLASTICS: A REVIEW

Physical properties of underlying resins are fundamentally important to the durability of decorative electroplates grown on their surfaces. These properties are: coefficient of thermal expansion, heat distortion temperature, and strength. Circumstances of molding and preplating have major significance, as do the metal properties, themselves. A summary of pertinent literature provides bases for proper application of these factors for a given situation. Properly applied electroplated plastics produce lightweight, complex, low cost, durable parts, with a lustrous chromium finish that adds to appeal and marketability of the automobile.
