RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENTS

These statements on research problems in the operation and maintenance of transportation, is an attempt to identify research needs and communicate them to the transportation research communities. Of the eight problem statements considered, two, were considered high priority and two were considered moderate. Problem of highest priority was "Approach to roadside safety on two-lane non-freeways." The proposed research is outlined and is estimated to cost $125,000 and to last 1-1/2 years. Problem No. 2 is "Operational effects of reduced geometry in freeway construction and work areas." Problem No. 3 is "Optimum median width for rural and suburban expressways." Problem No. 4 is "Cost effectiveness of providing skid resistant surfaces on all bituminous overlay improvements." The objectives and scope of all proposed research are stated as well as their degree of urgency, estimated cost and study time.
