LOOKING FOR A "UNIVERSAL" REEFER DESIGN

With a worldwide depression in the shipbuilding industry, many yards have either attempted diversification or reduced their production capacity. However, for some, this difficult period has been a spur to introduce new designs, which reflecting considerable work and cost with no client contracted, indicate the desire of the company to stay in business. Such a yard is the Lubeck shipyard of Orenstein & Koppel. The design work which has occupied its drawing offices for some considerable time is that of a multi-purpose refrigerated vessel able to carry conventional, containerized or palletized reefer cargo. No orders have yet been won for this ship, yet considerable interest is being shown in the concept and its potential.
