In 1965 the Johansson group established a small port at Wallhamn, a modest community on the west coast of Sweden just north of Gothenburg. Despite the then current opinion that there were already enough harbours on the west coast, this port has now established itself as a major independent handling centre. The Johansson group who own the terminal, have no desire to compete with the Port of Gothenburg as they mainly handle roll-on/roll-off ships of their own fleet, or chartered to them and it is, therefore, seen as an integral part of their shipping interests. After losing its main trade in 1978, the group has since been so succesful in filling the void that they have had to charter in ro-ro tonnage to complete the last shipments. Shortly to start up is their venture with Fiat which establishes Wallhamn terminal as the Nordic entre for the distribution of Fiat lorries construction plant -- with this providing a very useful back load for their ro-ro ships returning from the Middle East.
