Earthen Berm Noise Reduction Analysis
Earthen berms that mitigate noise are less expensive to construct and maintain than structural concrete and fiberglass noise walls, but there is a limited amount of available information about the comparative effectiveness of earthen berms, especially related to acoustic benefits. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze data to determine the effect of acoustic testing elements on noise levels, perform a life cycle cost comparison between earthen berms and concrete noise walls, calculate equivalent effective height factors between earthen berms and structural noise walls, and develop interactive life cycle cost and equivalent effective height tables to be used for earthen berm and structural wall cost estimation.
