A wireless micro

Researchers at Iowa State University's National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (ISU/CP Tech Center) are investigating the use of wireless, microfabricated sensor systems in order to detect and monitor data related to pavement distresses in concrete pavements. The use of wired sensors, the traditional means of accomplishing structural health monitoring (SHM), has limitations for the long-term, as well as presenting other associated cost and safety concerns. Fortunately, recent achievements in micro-electro-mechanical sensors and systems (MEMS) and nano-electromechanical sensors and systems (NEMS) technology make possible the manufacturing of sensors using microfabrication techniques, showing great potential for improving the traditional SHM approach. Details of the research study are presented here.
