THE HYDRAULICS OF PUMPING OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS: INITIAL REPORT ON THE THEORETICAL APPROACH AND THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS IN THE LABORATORY AND ON MOTORWAYS

The limitation of pumping and of stepping in concrete pavements requires a thorough knowledge of these phenomena and consequently calls for the use of hydrodynamic and physical models. This article presents, for the benefit of field engineers and research workers, the conclusions of a study of the hydraulic functioning of concrete pavements. The theoretical study is supplemented by experiments in the laboratory and on motorways (measurements of water pressure under the slabs and determination of critical speed of expulsion of water). The implications of this study are numerous, and relate to: The notion of the critical depth of the cavity under the slab at which pumping becomes most acute. The effect of the speed of heavy vehicles. The effect of the sleew of transverse joints. The effect of the extra-width of the slab of the heavy vehicle lane. The draining property of the sub-base and the improved subgrade. The importance of the thickness of the slabs. Injections under the slabs. This study forms a coherent whole along with the study of the erodability of sub-bases and improved subgrades. /Authors/
