A METHOD FOR INVESTIGATING PERMEABLE LAYERS IN CLAY

NY FAELTMETOD FOER UNDERSOEKNING AV PERMEABLA SKIKT I LERA

This article presents a field method of identifying permeable layers in clay. The method implies the use of measurements of the pore pressure throughout the area. This determines whether or not there are permeable layers there. The extent and limits of the layers are determined by pumping out or by infiltration and measuring the pressures and flows throughout the area. The theoretical background is described. The equipment used must not disturb the surrounding soil and pore pressure meters are used at several levels to determine vertical flows. Pilot tests have been carried out in an artificial basin. The results were better than expected and full scale tests are to be carried out shortly. /TRRL/
