DO CAR DRIVERS HAVE AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS?

BEHERRSCHEN DIE FAHRZEUGFUEHRER IN AUSREICHENDEM MASSE DIE VERKEHRSVORSCHRIFTEN?

A traffic quiz conducted by the traffic police during a second-hand market in Westfalenhalle, during the evening meeting of an automobile club and in a technical college showed that a large proportion of the participants do not know important traffic rules. The percentage of incorrect answers to the eight questions was very high. So, for instance, the question concerning the meaning of traffic sign 251 was incorrectly answered by 61%, 36% and 67% respectively of the three groups examined. On the basis of the poor results an appeal is made to authorities concerned to consider whether the type of traffic education as currently practiced is correct. Especially the television authorities, the traffic safety council, the federal traffic police and the motoring organisations are called upon to reflect whether the teaching of simple traffic regulations should be included into their present educational work. /TRRL/
