THE CONNECTION BETWEEN AGGRESSION, CRIMINALITY AND ACCIDENT FREQUENCY

ZUSAMMENHAENGE ZWISCHEN AGGRESSION, KRIMINALITAET UND UNFALLHAEUFIGKEIT

One person in ten of those convicted during 1971 of aggressive offences against the person had previous convictions involving negligently causing death or injury in traffic, whereas only one in fifteen of offenders involving property had such prior convictions. Among the group of aggressive offenders despite the high incidence of previous convictions involving drunkenness (32,4%) one in four had previous convictions for causing death or injury. In contrast the least risk was associated with those delinquents convicted for drunkenness not associated with driving. The higher incidence of prior convictions for negligently causing death or injury is associated with the increased aggression of general criminals. The more previous convictions, the greater the connection between general delinquency and traffic offences. General criminals can be distinguished from other multiple offenders in the first instance by the consequences rather than the form of their traffic offences. It must be surmised that aggression represents a common root of both traffic offences and general criminal behaviour. In connection with drunken driving, and previous convictions, it was noted that 43,7% of drunken drivers had prior convictions for either traffic offences or general criminal offences, compared to 25,4% of those committing similar offences, but not under the influence of alcohol. /TRRL/
