SUCCESSFUL FOUR-YEAR SURVEY ON PROTOTYPE PILGRIM PROPELLER

The tailshaft survey of the 43,000 dwt bulk carrier Duhallow, to which the Pilgrim nut and keyless bore propeller was fitted four years ago, showed that the propeller and tailshaft were in good condition. Crack testing of the shaft confirming its soundness. The stern bearing was found to have worn down only seven thousandths of an inch. The Pilgrim nut is a self-contained hydraulic jack which pushes a propeller up the tailshaft taper with forces of up to 4000 t. This creates an accurately controlled interference fit which eliminates the stress raising effect of keys and keyways. Details are given for the major features of the design and their effects upon boss stresses at different temperatures.
