SYSTEMS APPROACH TO OPTIMIZE SHIP DESIGN IN TOTAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PROJECT--APPLICATION TO LNG TRANSPORTATION PROJECT
LNG at atmospheric pressure is a cryogenic temperature liquid at about -162C. To transport this LNG in large quantities, high technology and large investments are necessary in such facilities as pipelines, liquefaction, gasification, storage and marine transport. The technology to optimize the total transportation system has therefore a large influence on its economy. Especially, LNG tankers as the means of transport play a central role, and its freight could determine success or failure of the LNG project itself. In the literature so far published on the economy of LNG transport, the system model used is a simple flow, and analysis is mostly made on the economy of each individual component. In a major transport project such as of LNG, however, optimization and economic evaluation of international transportation projects between multiple supply and demand areas, and optimization of a total project or subsystems, particularly LNG tankers, have to be made by a logical systematic method for overall economy. For this purpose the Transportation Analysis Program for LNG Project (THANSAP-LNG) was developed by the present authors.
