ACCURACY OF CLASSIFICATION OF GEOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS BASED ON THE MAGNITUDE OF GROUP INDEX

TACNOST KLASIFIKACIJE GEOLOSKO GRADJEVINSKIH MATERIJALA ZASNOVANE NA VELICINE GRUPNOG INDEKSA

The paper discusses the "group index" - a parameter used in road construction for the assessment of the quality of materials which are used in pavement sub-grades. Investigations carried out by the author on about seventy specimens of sandy-silty-clays, containing fractions of slate demonstrated that there existed considerable differences in the values of correlation of group index CBR in relation to the correlation diagram of these values which is given in literature. For this reason, the author suggests that some corrective factor be introduced into the formula by which the group index is determined, which could include petrographic characteristics of the material. Results and reasonings outlined in this paper are of great value and they merit careful attention, particularly as a warning that mistakes may be made by the automatic application of correlations accepted from literature.
