Trials with the purpose of finding a new low cost surfacing are carried out in Sweden. Gravel roads were provided with a very simple surfacing named Y1G, the road geometry being left unchanged. In the paving operation the same technique as in surface dressing was used and the same material as in oil gravel. The experience of Y1G in Sweden is so far good. The cost of gravel road maintenance and the consumption of high quality crushed gravel - ca 40-50 cubic metres per km - makes Y1G an interesting alternative to traditional gravel road maintenance. Therefore the trials will in the year 1978 be extended by another 800 km. The low investment cost of Y1G in comparison to maintenance cost of gravel roads justifies a rather high risk level in a situation of restricted allowance. All gravel roads are not suitable for Y1G. The bearing capacity is not improved by Y1G surfacing. The applicability is also limited by a certain sensitivity to frost damage. /TRRL/
