Road Tunnels: Complex Underground Road Networks
The density of occupation of land surface in urban areas, increasingly demanding environmental expectations and the increase in the demand for mobility lead to develop more and more underground structures. These structures are very diverse and increasingly complex. This report concerns the analysis of twenty-seven “complex underground road networks” (or tunnels complexes) by the working group 5 of the Technical Committee 3.3 Road Tunnel Operation of the World Road Association (PIARC). The teachings and preliminary recommendations obtained from this analysis are presented in this report. Contents include: geometry, traffic conditions, safety, ventilation, environment, and operation.
