The paper summarises the results and theoretical interpretation of TRRL household car ownership surveys. A simple binomial relationship is developed which enables land-use and transport planners to convert between levels of car ownership for an area and the proportions of households within that area having different levels of car ownership. The relationship is supported by empirical data from the national censuses and is consistent with a simple theoretical model. (TRRL)
