This book considers some of the factors involved in the analysis and performance of rock under the influence of load, water, and temperature. Emphasis is placed on basic concepts rather than on detailed theories and procedures. Rock is dealt with as an engineering material. The book concentrates on essentials necessary for obtaining adequate information for the understanding of the discipline rock mechanics. The material is organized in four parts. Part 1 deals with rocks, their classification, and objectives of rock mechanics. Part 2 reviews briefly methods of rock exploration and the various properties of rocks, their strength, their deformation, and failure. Part 3 treats stresses in rock about circular underground openings, and describes some engineering problems associated with work in rock. Part 4 discusses stabilization of rock and rock slopes by means of rock bolting. (TRRL)
