Road factors associated with older driver crashes: an empirical study of driver behaviors
South Korean older drivers experience a higher risk of motor vehicle crashes because of their cognitive impairment and the decline of visual acuity. Although several studies have been conducted to examine the factors associated with the occurrence of older drivers’ vehicle crashes, little of these studies have applied empirical research. This study is concerned about this problem and finds based on a field study investigation with a test vehicle that older drivers are most likely to involve in vehicle crashes when their vehicle turning paths and eye fixation characteristics involve certain patterns. This study then establishes a model to explain the crash contribution of intersection road factors, and the model seems to describe older driver behavior, road factors, and crash occurrences very well. The findings from this study should increase our understanding of older driver crashes and improve the safety of older drivers.
