TEST SCATTER IN DETERMINING THE E-MODULUS OF CONCRETE

Variations of up to plus or minus 20% in the e-modulus of concrete are quoted in the literature. It is not clear however how much of the scatter is due to experimental factors and how much is inherent in the material. To obtain clarification in this respect, a total of 135 e-modulus tests were carried out on 60 prisms 12/12/36 at ages of 3 to 28 days. The result of these tests was that the experimental scatter was of the order of magnitude as for cube tests. A large proportion of the rilem requirements for e-modulus tests (10 pre-loads, difference of the two strains) are not necessary. The normal pre-load of 0.1 to 0.2 n/sq mm is too low. It should be at least 5% of the range of the testing machine. About two-thirds of the variation in the e-modulus of plus or minus 20% can be attributed to test factors, while one-third is inherent in the material conditions. /TRRL/
