Testing Linearity in the Long-Run Relationship between Economic Growth and Passenger Air Transport in Mexico

This article reports on a study of the long-term relationship between economic growth and passenger air transport in Mexico. The authors conducted a study of quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) data and number of air passengers in Mexico for the period 1995-2013. The authors use non-parametric co-integration techniques and non-parametric causality tests of the data. These procedures allow the testing of the existence of a long-term relationship between the variables. Results showed the existence of a co-integration, linear relationship between air transport and economic growth. The authors conclude with a brief discussion of how their study demonstrates the importance of applying a more complete procedure for testing long-term relationships between two economic variables.
