TRAFFIC FLOWS ON FEDERAL MOTORWAYS DURING BANK-HOLIDAYS AND HOLIDAY PEAK DAYS IN 1977

FAHRLEISTUNGEN AUF BUNDESAUTOBAHNEN AN PEIER- UND FERIENSPITZENTAGEN 1977

In 1977 short term traffic levels were recorded for the first time on a total of 31 days when critical traffic flows were achieved on federal motorways. Consideration of the heavily trafficked days in 1977 shows that the observed traffic density during the main holiday period was greater than that of bank holidays and that within the bank holiday periods there were greater variations than were observed during week-ends in the main holiday periods. During the course of the main holiday period it is noticeable that traffic flows during the first half, characterized by motorists proceeding on holiday, were higher than in the second half, when they were returning home: this gives the impression that the return journey is more favourably distributed than the journey out. Where both directions meet, extremely high traffic densities are recorded. Days falling in this period show higher traffic flows than any other corresponding week days within the period under examination and presumably at any other time of the year. In comparison with 1976 there was an increase of 2.5% for the Easter holiday period, 6.2% for the Whitsun period and 7.0% for the peak holiday period. With the exception of the easter values, these rates of increase fall generally into line with the estimate prepared by the Federal Highway Institute for the increase in traffic flow for 1977 compared to 1976, namely 6.5%. /TRRL/
