Out of the Desert?
This article explores some of the issues confronting the U. S. rail industry in 2017 and the potential impact of the new political administration on the industry's future direction. The author highlights changes in railroads' core pricing power, future expectations for coal traffic, and the implications of President Trump's desire to renegotiate or eliminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The article also discusses the implications of the current downturn in rail traffic and freight car demand as well as proposed technological innovation that could help the industry.
