Managing Critical Truck Parking Case Study – Real World Insights from Truck Parking Diaries
This report analyzes truck parking diaries from 148 commercial drivers collected June to September 2016 to examine the impact of truck parking shortages. The diary data represents 2,035 days of truck parking activity and 4,763 unique stops. Information collected included driver demographics, length of haul, tools used to find parking, unauthorized/undesignated parking stops, time spent searching for parking, and factors influencing stop location. It was found that peak demand for parking occurs in the evening and early morning hours; drivers with electronic logging devices (ELDs) spent more time searching for parking; and that parking early, rather than risk not finding a spot later, can cost a driver lost wages of up to $4,600 annually (9,300 revenue-earning miles). The report concludes with recommendations for addressing truck parking issues.
