Ground Tire Rubber as a Component Material in Paving Concrete

The management of solid waste is a major environmental concern in the United States. This paper investigates the properties of ground tire rubber (GTR) concrete, for its potential application in paving concrete and large scale applications at ready-mix plants. An experiment was designed for varying the amount of fine aggregate size GTR in trial mixes of rubber concrete. Tests to ascertain mechanical properties, modulus of elasticity, plastic shrinkage, and construction of test slabs were conducted on GTR concrete and compared to ordinary Portland cement concrete. Results from preliminary tests indicated that GTR concrete specimens were of low mechanical strength properties, were not brittle at failure, and displayed improved elasticity when compared with ordinary Portland cement concrete. Further detailed and more comprehensive tests ts showed improved mechanical strength characteristics upon the addition of admixtures and reduction in water-to-cement ratio. Plastic shrinkage test results indicated that the inclusion of GTR helped in reducing plastic shrinkage cracks in concrete. Findings from Scanning Electron Microscope indicated the presence of needle-like ettringites on the interface of the cement matrix with the rubber representing good bonding, while results of long term slab monitoring indicated the elimination of drying shrinkage cracks on the long GTR concrete sidewalk slabs.
