An Analysis of the Time-of-Day Choices of the Elderly for Non Work Travel

Population in the world and in particular in US is projected to age rapidly. Natural health decline associated with aging and retirement are among factors which can trigger a different travel behavior for this growing segment of population compared to other cohorts. On the light of that, this study focuses on modeling start time of trips for top four trip purposes among Floridian elderly including shopping, social or recreational, meal and medical or dental purposes, by using National Household Transportation Surveys (NHTS) 2009. Two different continuous-time modeling frameworks are used which produced consistent results. Apart from age, other individual and household socio-demographics such as educational level, employment status and auto availability were found to affect elderly time-of-day choice for some trip purposes. In addition, the empirical results reveal that other trip-related decisions such as mode, activity duration and destination choice are significantly correlated with start time of trip choice for the non-home activity purposes studied. For instance, it is found that longer duration of non-home activities and further destinations are associated with an earlier start of trip by elderly. This study defines elderly as people with 65 years of age or above.
