Correlating Asphalt Recycling Rate and Rheological Model Parameters of Bitumen

Currently, many efforts are undertaken to analyze and achieve methods to suggest asphalt performance from binder performance to reduce expensive and time extensive laboratory tests on asphalt materials. In this context it is important to use and develop appropriate testing methods for a comprehensive binder characterization. The test evaluation should imply the application of suitable material models. Depending on the application, different models can be used to model rheological bitumen behavior. This paper focuses on the applicability of the Christiansen and Anderson model (CA model) and the Olard-Di Benedetto (2S2P1D) model, using different error type criteria, for bitumen samples containing different amounts of recycled components. The objective is to analyze the influence of the reclaimed asphalt rate on the parameters of the investigated models. Therefore, binders extracted from reclaimed asphalt mixes, Stone Mastic Asphalt mixes with polymer modified bitumen and Asphalt Concrete mixes with paving bitumen have been used. The reclaimed asphalt content of the studied bitumen samples varied from 0% to 100%. In order to analyze the material performance of the bitumen samples Dynamic Shear Rheometer tests were conducted in the laboratory of the Technical University of Dresden (Germany). The resulting influence of the reclaimed asphalt content in the bituminous binders are illustrated through master curves, black diagrams and Cole-Cole plots with regressing these experimental data by the application of the 2S2P1D and CA models.
