Comparison of Driving Performance Under Different Positions of Smartphone Used for Navigation

This study aimed to compare the driving performance under different positions of smartphone used for navigation and find out the one causing least driving distraction. The driving performance under three typical positions of smartphone, including the upper right of the dashboard (position 1), the left side of the dashboard (position 2) and the right side of the dashboard (position 3) were evaluated by a driving simulator. Measurements including mean speed, standard deviation of speed, standard deviation of lane position (SDLP), eye-glance duration and eye-glance frequency were examined. Thirty subjects, divided into experienced group and non-experienced group according to their driving mileages, participated in the experiment. The experiment results indicated that (a) the highest mean speed was achieved when smartphone was on position 2 for both experienced and non-experienced drivers. (b) For experienced drivers, standard deviation of speed was the smallest with smartphone located on position 1. While for non-experienced drivers, standard deviation of speed was the smallest when smartphone was on position 3. (c)For experienced drivers, SDLP was the smallest with smartphone located on position 1. While for non-experienced drivers, SDLP was the smallest when smartphone was on position 3. (d) Eye-glance duration was not significantly affected by driving experience and smartphone positions. (e) Eye-glance frequency was the lowest when smartphone was on position 2 for both experienced drivers and non-experience drivers.
